A Little of history…..

Crayola history begins more than a century ago,s when Edwin Binney and his cousin C. Harold Smith formed a partnership and took over operation of the Peekskill Chemical Company in New York, owned by Binny´s father. Initial products were carbon black for car tiersd and red oxide pigment for paiting barns. It was 1885 and it was a big deal The black pigment became the black choise in printers ink, shoe polish and tiers; and more color were on the way.

The two cousins called their company Binney & Smith. In 1902 they produced the dustless chalk which won a Gold Medal at St. Louis World´s Fair.

Listening to teacher´s needs who requested better wax sticks for their students, they rose to the ocasion and in 1903 create, the first Non toxic, not brittle and gloriously colorful crayons which revolutioned art in classrooms and eventually in homes.

Quality crayons like these needed their own name, and Edwin´s wife Alice dreamed one up Crayola crayon, taking “Craie” from the french world for chalk and “ola” from oily or oleaginous.

The Binney & Smith product line expanded to specialty crayons and paints for the fine artists workshops for teachers, safety and quality standards and more.

In 1958 the classic Crayola crayon collection was introducted . A 64- color pack that included the company first crayón sharpener built into the box.

In 1978, their first markers were produced, of all kinds of colors, coinciding with Crayola 75 th Anniversary.

In 1984 Crayola became part of Hallmark, a perfect partnership.

Colored pencils and a fine line of washable markers were added in 1987.

In 1996 the doors of Crayola factory in Easton, PA were opened. It has been a family destination for fun and discovery. Now, known as Crayola Experience, the magic of color and creativity is availiable to kids of all ages in various locations.

In 2007 Crayola LLC was formed to emphasize the power of the brand.

In 2011, My First Crayola was launched. Products include triangular crayons and flat-tipped markers.

In 2015, Crayola announced "Color Escapes" for adults to help them relieve stress. The kit will include four collections, such as geometric, garden, natural, and kaleidoscope.

For more than 100 years Crayola has met the needs of moms and educators helping them inspire kids to grow up to be creative adults.
